Youth Basketball: What Parents Should be Keeping in Mind

Youth Basketball: What Parents Should be Keeping in Mind Whether you’re just starting out in the sport or well on your way to playing club ball, a basketball parent comes to realize that basketball, like some other sports, is one that has a culture all its own. Some of these things you will no doubt be familiar with – others, perhaps, not so much. Here are a few things I’ve learned over the years as a basketball parent: 1. It is perfectly normal for your first youth basketball game, especially if your kids are younger than five, to resemble that of circus or farm. There are wandering cattle, lost sheep, and lots of whistles. 2. As a parent of a little dribbler, you might feel you need to purchase “the best” basketball shoes so that your child’s ankles are fully supported. This parent didn’t. Our daughter wore her typical athletic sneakers her first season. For our child’s second basketball season, we bought the least expensive basketball shoe at our local sports store. Our young kids...

Royal Basketball School Safety Protocols.

Image
As we get closer to reopening our gym classes for basketball training, we also need to make sure safety protocols are in place to combat Covid19. Following the guidelines published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we hope for everyone to remember the basket when playing basketball.  Be tested for Covid19  We are in the business of providing basketball lessons to kids but the safety of everybody remains to be our top priority. Parents can rest assured that our coaches and staff at the gym are tested for the novel corona virus.  Always wear a mask  Coaches and parents are advised to wear a mask when unable to maintain a 6-feet physical distance from each other during basketball sessions. Kids will not be required to wear a mask during training or games. Sanitized gym and sports equipment  Regular disinfection and sanitization will be conducted to make sure the gym and necessary sports equipment are safe to use. Frequent hand washing wil...

7 TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT SPORT GAMES

7 TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT SPORT GAMES Here are 7 ideas to try out with kids of all ages: FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA 1. INSPIRE THEM VIA PERSONAL EXAMPLE Bring them to your “extracurricular” activity. Ideally, it should be related to the sport they are going to start practicing. However, any kind of sport, even any kind of hobby, like arts or walking tours etc., may do the job. Let your child feel that “extracurricular” does not mean extra homework. It means extra fun. Extra excitement. Extra interesting, fascinating and unforgettable experience. Let them see that you - and adult - do it absolutely voluntarily, because it makes you happier. Then the child gets interested in finding his / her own hobby.  2. SHOW THEM WHAT THEY ARE SIGNING UP TO Give you kids an idea of what their “ out-of-school” activities are about. Take them to see a professional game. Play this game with them in your backyard. Show them a championsh...

Shooting Drill To Practice with Your Young Royal!

Image
How the Drill Works: Players at the top of the key dribble down and perform a handoff, with a wing player cutting to the top of the key, who then takes the shot or drives for the layup. Purpose: To work on shooting off hand-offs, and perfecting them.  This can be a tricky skill for for players to master, unless they practice often. Setup: Two lines at the top of the key. Both have two basketballs in each line.  One line of players on the lower end of each wing. Instructions: 1.  The first players from the top of the key dribble down to the wing on their respective sides. At the same time, the wing player should be making cut towards the baseline. 2.  Making sure to change speeds, the wing player explodes up towards the wing, receives the hand-off and then performs a certain shot. 3.  The person that hands off the basketball joins the end of the wing-line. 4.  The shooter rebounds their basketball, and then joins the line at the top...

The Importance of Summer Camps & Clinics: Adding Depth to your Child's Game

Image
Why should your Child attend Camps & Clinics?  With many youth basketball teams, the trend over the past couple decades has been to play more games and do less skill work. While games are important, your child needs a healthy balance of game time and practice time. The problem with more games and less practice is that your child will touch the ball much less. With more touches, your child becomes a better basketball player.  With all things being equal, we'll break down a typical 32-minute game:  32 x 5 = 160 total minutes for a team of 8 players.  160 minutes / 8 players = 20 minutes per player.  20 minutes per player / 2 = 10 minutes of time that your team is on offense.  10 minutes / 5 players = your child is only touching the ball for two minutes per game!!  During our typical skill sessions, the player will have the ball in their hands 60 to 90 minutes.  That means you have to play 30 to 45 games to touch the ball as much as...
