7 TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT SPORT GAMES

Here are 7 ideas to try out with kids of all ages:

1. INSPIRE THEM VIA PERSONAL EXAMPLE

Bring them to your “extracurricular” activity. Ideally, it should be related to the sport they are going to start practicing. However, any kind of sport, even any kind of hobby, like arts or walking tours etc., may do the job. Let your child feel that “extracurricular” does not mean extra homework. It means extra fun. Extra excitement. Extra interesting, fascinating and unforgettable experience. Let them see that you - and adult - do it absolutely voluntarily, because it makes you happier. Then the child gets interested in finding his / her own hobby.

2. SHOW THEM WHAT THEY ARE SIGNING UP TO

Give you kids an idea of what their “out-of-school” activities are about. Take them to see a professional game. Play this game with them in your backyard. Show them a championship on TV (or championship video-records on the laptop). Give them a book about the sports they are about to start doing. Show them a film about this sport and the life of sportsmen. Let them see what it is like and how cool it is, so that they get interested in this particular type of activity.

3. LET THEM EXPERIENCE THE "REAL DEAL"

A theory is surely great, but it cannot compete with personal practice. Not “backyard” practice this time, but a real, serious one. Take your kids to a trial training. Let them feel the court, meet their future friends and experience the game. Attending trial training enables children (well, and parents too) to get a clear image of what it is like and how it feels. At the same time, even a shy kid is going to feel that it is a safe environment: it’s just a trial, no commitments. Let your child see that there is nothing scary, and that it's great fun.

4. USE "FRIENDS-MAKING TOOL"

Ideally, it would be great to put your kids in the same group with their friends. Starting a new activity and a whole new chapter of life together with friends means getting even more excited about each training, as well as having more confidence and courage. If that’s not possible, it might be a good idea to talk to your children and explain that joining a new team always means making many awesome new friends. It means to be a part of something big, fun and great. A chance to meet up with buddies always makes any activity more interesting.

5. MAKE THEM EXCITED BY THE VERY PREPARATION

Try to engage your kids in the very process of preparing for the first training. Involve them in choosing which T-shirt to wear on the first training, pack their sports bag together, and how about a new hairstyle for girls? Active preparations to a “big day” lead to impatient anticipation, which makes both children and adults more excited about any event. Besides, by participating in packing and eventually managing it on their own, kids become more responsible.

6. TAKE THEM SPORTS SHOPPING

Children love new toys. Any kind of new stuff, to be more precise. Why not use shopping as an extra way to get them interested in starting their training? You will probably need to buy new comfortable shoes anyway. Maybe, new shorts, or a T-shirt, or a bag, or you-name-it. Take your kids with you and get them involved in choosing the item they need. In case you already have everything, well, a new water bottle costs around $2-$3 but will give a sparkle of Christmas mood to your child.

7. SET SEVERAL GOALS TO HIT

Have you noticed how much more motivated and productive you get when you have a clear goal to hit? The same happens to children. If they are not sure why they would need to sacrifice their precious midday nap or fascinating time spent staring at their phones for spending hours on the court, give them a target. Let’s say, “you need to reach the mastery of playing basketball to participate in competitions, which will make you stand out and look really cool”. Or, “when you are able to throw the ball in the basket 10 times in a row, you will officially become the best sportsman in our family”. See how much your child’s motivation can be increased by these simple words.
