James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891 at the age of 30. At this time James worked as a physical education teacher in Springfield YMCA.

One spring when the weather got really bad and it rained for days and days, head of physical education ordered him to invent the game that would answer the precise requirements:
- It must be indoors
- It should not take up much space
- It has to keep athletes in shape
- It must be fair and inclusive
- I shall not be too rough

While James was thinking about the new games, he analyzed the most popular team sports at the time - soccer, rugby, baseball, hockey, lacrosse and football. His main goal was to keep the game exciting, energy-consuming and yet very safe.

He saw that most physical contact occurred while running with the ball, dribbling or hitting it, so he decided that passing was the only legal option. Finally, Naismith further reduced body contact by making the goal unguardable, namely placing it high above the player's heads. To score goals, he forced the players to throw a soft, lobbing shot that had proven effective in his old favorite game duck on a rock. Naismith christened this new game "Basket Ball" and put his thoughts together in 13 basic rules.
The very first game of basketball was played in December 1981. That's how it was different from the game that we all know and love:

- nine versus nine
- soccer ball
- the goals were a pair of peach baskets

Since then, basketball evolved and gradually became an Olympic sport and a game with millions of fans all over the world!
