First Basketball Class

It's official - your kids are in love with basketball (and who can blame them?).  You are ready to sign them up.  Congratulations! Basketball is great for all ages.  With the right coach, basketball will surely become their favorite sport in the world.

We get a lot of questions about preparation.  Though there are not a lot of requirements for basketball, we recommend a few things to everyone before their first practice.

1. Get comfortable

First things first. One of the most important thing in any sport, including basketball, is to get the right gear.  Though we provide specialized Royal Basketball School uniforms, you will still need to think about a pair of comfy kicks. We always recommend getting sneakers made specifically for basketball from well-known brands, as they usually last the longest. You can't overlook quality as the kids get REALLY active.  We also recommend getting your kids a water bottle so they can always stay hydrated.

2. Be Inspired

Getting into basketball requires dedication and persistence. Motivation comes from knowing your goals and having the right role models. We always recommend parents get involved as much as possible.  Whether it's watching movies about basketball together or shooting hoops in the back yard, getting your support will inspire your child and give him the confidence they need.

3. Do Your Homework

Like any sports, basketball has rules and terms. We teach all the fundamentals in class, but we recommend kids and parents learn a few basic terms.

Here is our glossary:

Airball: A shot at the basket that misses everything: the ball doesn't touch the rim, backboard or net.

Drill:  A basketball exercise designed to improve certain skills. Ex. Dribbling drill, shooting drill etc.

Lay-Up: A shot taken close to the hoop, usually stepping into it.

Rebound: When a player from either team retrieves the ball after a missed shot, gaining possession of the ball.

Swish: A made basket where the ball avoids the rim and touches nothing but the net, creating a "swish" sound.

4. Have Fun

And in all the process never forget to just enjoy the moment and the thrill of the game!

Don't forget that on 3rd March 2019 (Sunday) we organize our annual RBS Cup. It's the perfect opportunity to get to know our current students and their parents, watch the alumni games and participate in many fun contests.
