Nine Tips that Help Parents Connect to their Children

Image
Raising kids is one of the toughest and most fulfilling jobs in the world — and the one for which you might feel the least prepared. Here are nine child-rearing tips that can help you feel more fulfilled as a parent. 1. Boosting Your Child's Self-Esteem Kids start developing their sense of self as babies when they see themselves through their parents' eyes. Your tone of voice, your body language, and your every expression are absorbed by your kids. Your words and actions as a parent affect their developing self-esteem more than anything else. Praising accomplishments, however small, will make them feel proud; letting kids do things independently will make them feel capable and strong. By contrast, belittling comments or comparing a child unfavorably with another will make kids feel worthless. 2. Catch Kids Being Good Have you ever stopped to think about how many times you react negatively to your kids in a given day? You may find yourself criticizing far more often than complim...

Being an Exemplary Youth Sport's Parent - Part 2

Image
Here are seven strategies that parents can learn, to optimize their child's love and passion for their sport of choice. 1. Model Positive Behaviors Be a positive role model for your child. Sports should be an extension of your familial values and behaviors, not a suspension of them. Try to be an encouraging parent. Refrain from banter about competitors, or loudly second-guessing the coach. The players and coaches are all trying their best, and all players develop at different times 2. See the Future, Enjoy the Present Are you consistently looking towards the next level, the next team, the next season? If you are, you’re missing out on the most important game, the one being played today! If you’re not enjoying the present moment, your child will grow up before you realize it. 3. Encourage Healthy Risk Taking Challenge you child to take risk, by saying, “I love how you really went for it out there on that one play. You didn’t get it, but I was so proud that you didn’t give up!” Stron...

Being an Exemplary Youth Sport's Parent - Part 1

Image
Shouting abusive comments, stomping their feet, yelling at the referees, mocking the coach; we all know a negative youth sport's parent when we see one. These images are never a good sight at a youth basketball game. Other parents sitting in close proximity feel embarrassed to be associated with them. Their own child watches on in bewilderment at the actions of their parent. There’s really no place for a parent that acts this way in youth sports. Sports are competitive. It’s easy for parents to get caught up in the game, just like the players and coaches do. Every parent wants their child to have success. Unfortunately, this adult fueled competitive nature, and the innate parental desire to see your child to succeed has led many parents to forget what is really important in youth sports. We also have parents who come to games, sit happily on the sidelines encouraging their kid, and appreciate the enjoyment their child is having no matter what numbers say on the scoreboard. These ar...

Top Six Active WNBA Stars

Image
Top Six Active WNBA Stars Women’s basketball has become a sensation in the past few decades and the WNBA is a major reason why. Since the league’s first season in 1997, it has seen its list of teams grow along with its talent pool. The players coming out of college and the international game have only gotten better, as each new season’s stars threaten to burn up the record books. 1. Diana Taurasi (2004-Present) In terms of pure numbers, it’s mighty hard to argue with Diana Taurasi. Arguably the best guard in WNBA history, she’s a three-time champion who has averaged 19.6 points per game in a career that has lasted 15 seasons so far. No player in the league has scored more points than her and it’s not even close, with Taurasi outpacing second place by more than 1,000 points. The 13-time All-WNBA selection has an offensive style that simply can’t be stopped, giving her by far the best scoring average of any player that’s played anywhere near her number of games, which stands above ...

Benefits of playing Basketball for Kids

Image
Benefits of Playing Basketball: For Kids Basketball, is a phenomenal outdoor/indoor activity which allows children (and adults) to get exercise, play with friends, and learn teamwork. We believe, encouraging your child to play basketball at a young age will not only help him benefit from the virtues of a rigorous (also very fun) sport. Our school's goal is to have basketball function as a foundation for staying active later in life. On the bright side, basketball, does not require much equipment to purchase in order to start playing. If there is no basketball court nearby you, we don't think that should be a hinderance from yourself and your child to get involved with the game. One way to bring basketball to you, would be putting up a hoop in a large indoor area, or even better; you could put one up outdoors. A number of sports brands offer equipment like hoops, nets, and backboards that can be easily put up and disassembled after use. 8 Different Ways Basketball Will Improve...
