How Much is Your Child Really Learning?

Image
How Much is Your Child Really Learning?  Your child is learning in a time like none other in recent history. Some students are learning remotely, only interacting with teachers and peers through a screen. Some are attending school just a few days a week, pivoting between distance and onsite learning daily. Others are back in the classroom full time, but with masks, social distancing, plexiglass partitions and one-way hallways. How is your student doing, really?  Do you know if your child is happy? What is the best way to check on their emotional and mental well-being? A little detective work can be fruitful when trying to gauge your student’s emotional state. If remote learning, chances are they are set up in their bedroom or a quiet corner of the house to minimize distractions. Check in on them. Are they sitting up, looking at the screen and participating? Or are they slumped down, staring off into space and distracted? If you observe that your student is consistently tu...

Sports are a fantastic way to connect and develop deeper relationships with your children. As a parent, if you are looking to help enhance your child's basketball skillset, or if you want to learn how to relate yourself to your child's basketball journey, the guidelines listed below are a great place to start.  1. Basketball Knowledge: Becoming knowledgable about the sport in general, is a great place to start. Learning about the fundamentals of basketball, keeping up with local college/professional teams, and attending a few games would be a great place to start adding to your basketball knowledge.  2. Time is Important: It is critical to devote the necessary amount of time for your child to be able to practice, and to take lessons to enhance their skill-set. Many children can be left behind others developmentally if parents do not have enough time to devote sending their children to necessary practices and lessons. Professional basketball players never leave the gym. The bes...

A Quick Lesson From One of the Game's Best: Stephen Curry

Image
Here at Royal Basketball School, we are always searching for ways to help your child develop their basketball skills off the court.   If you ever wanted to know how to shoot like Stephen Curry, here is how he does it. We believe it is important to try and replicate the tactics of the NBA's best athletes. Curry is argubably the greatest shooter of all time. So, here's what we can take away:  Alignment: Curry keeps his shooting shoulder, elbow, and hip aligned. You can see that his shoulder is directly behind his elbow, in line with his hip. His forearm is slightly tilted away from this line, keeping the ball above his shooting eye. Hand Position: Stephen uses a relatively relaxed hand position on the ball, with his index finger and thumb making a V-shape. Also, notice that his hand is on the side of the ball, and rotates towards the net as he extends his arm. The Set-point: When Curry shoots, the ball first, travels backwards towards his head, before traveling forward towa...
